Site Design and Usability Landmines
You can find many different applications and design platforms available now for web sites and blogs. If you really want to nail site design, then learn about usability as it will most definitely impact everything else. This article will be a treatment of various types of web design mistakes, and we hope you will internalize them and go forward.
There are a number of major and minor browsers available to people including IE, Chrome and of course FireFox. It is very easy to make a site that appears fine in one, or two, of them but not all. Since not all browsers are created equal, cross-browser compatibility becomes an important issue to focus on when designing your website. Each site can have a number of different software languages used in it, and so it is hard to offer absolute advice that you can go with about this matter.
If you ever get the idea that playing any kind of music on your site would be a cool thing, then we ask that you reconsider. It is just something that people find annoying, and so you have to practice good usability concepts. If you have any kind of audio, then always give the visitor the controls so they can listen or not. The audio could be a guided tour or something that is helpful to the visitor, but still playing it automatically upon arrival is not a good idea. Have the audio's play and pause button clearly visible in your page so that you don't end up annoying the user. If it could possibly cause an issue with your site readers, then it is best to err on the side of caution.
Personally, we find it very annoying when we cannot immediately get to the home page due to some clever thing in place. They have this annoying flash intro that you have to go through before actually getting the real content. People, for the most part, have no interest in this practice; so at least put a link where they can choose to skip the intro. Your aim should be to present your unique offer right when you see the visitor come back, and not risk losing him due to some long, unneeded intro. Sometimes sites will have info about their business in the introduction, and that really is a terrible idea because no one cares.
There you go! Simple mistakes that can be easily avoided if you don't lose focus.
